Artificial Palm Trees

Artificial palm trees bring resort structure to a space — arching fronds, a fibrous trunk and a silhouette that reads as warmth from across a room. Faux palms are the default for poolsides, hotel lobbies, spas and tropical-styled restaurants, and they are the species most often specified for outdoor placement, because a frond handles wind and sun far better than a dense broadleaf canopy.

Which artificial palm trees are the most realistic?

Areca and kentia read best indoors, because their fronds are fine, arching and slightly irregular, and the eye forgives small repeated shapes in that geometry. Coconut and date palms are the most convincing at large scale outdoors, where the trunk does most of the work — look for a fibrous, cross-hatched or scarred trunk texture rather than a smooth brown tube. Fan palms are the hardest to fake well: a real fan frond is a single pleated blade, and cheaper versions assemble it from separate strips that never quite close up.

Can you put fake palm trees outside?

More readily than most species — palms are the workhorse of outdoor faux planting. Fronds spill air rather than trapping it, so a palm is far less prone to blowing over than a broadleaf tree of the same height, and palm foliage is typically the most heavily UV-stabilised in any range. Two cautions in a Canadian climate: check the product page for UV stabilisation rather than assuming it, and weight lightweight specimens or bring them in ahead of winter storms. See For Pools & Patios and Outdoor Trees.

How to choose the right size

Palms are narrow at the base and wide at the top, so the measurement that matters is frond spread at crown height, not footprint. A 6 ft areca occupies barely 40 cm of floor but throws fronds 1 to 1.2 m across at head height — which is exactly why palms work beautifully in corners and badly beside doorways. For a poolside or lobby, 8 to 10 ft delivers the resort effect; below 6 ft a palm reads as a houseplant rather than a tree. Multi-stem clumps fill wider than single-trunk palms at the same height. Taller specimens are in 12 Foot Artificial Trees.

Frequently asked questions

How do we clean an artificial palm tree?

Dust the fronds regularly with a soft brush or a vacuum on low suction, working along each frond from base to tip rather than against the grain of the leaflets, since palm foliage is thin and can crease if brushed the wrong way. A cool hairdryer on low airflow clears dust from tightly clustered fronds near the crown. Wipe a fibrous or textured trunk with a dry or barely damp cloth. Full method in our cleaning guide.

Does an artificial palm tree arrive assembled?

No. A palm ships with the trunk in one or more sections and the fronds separate or folded flat against the crown, since a fully assembled palm with fronds already spread is too wide to box. Assembly means slotting the trunk together, fitting each frond into its marked socket at the crown, and bending them into a natural arch, which takes longer than a broadleaf tree because there are more individual fronds to place. See our unboxing and shaping guide.

Does a palm tree come with a planter?

Some products in this collection include a planter and some ship as tree only, so check the individual product page rather than assuming either way. Where one is included, the title notes it. If sourcing a container separately, a palm's narrow base and top-heavy frond spread need a planter with real weight or a secured footing, not just a decorative pot, especially on taller specimens. See our planter guide.

Will the palm we receive match the height shown on the product page?

Yes — the height stated on the product page is what ships, though a solitary palm photographed against an empty background can look taller or shorter than it is once there's nothing nearby for scale. Where a product lists more than one height as a variant, select the one you want deliberately rather than assuming the pictured tree is the only size. Frond spread at crown height, not just trunk height, is worth checking against your space before ordering.

How does a faux palm compare with a living one?

A living palm indoors needs bright light and steady humidity, and most species will not tolerate a Canadian winter outdoors, so it stays a houseplant here rather than the poolside specimen it would be in a warmer climate. It also sheds frond litter as older leaves die back and needs regular watering and feeding. A faux palm holds its arch and colour year-round regardless of light, needs no watering, and can go outdoors seasonally where the product page allows it — but it will not put out new growth the way a living palm does.
