Will chlorine and pool chemicals damage artificial plants?
Splash and airborne chlorine are far less of a problem for faux planting than for real, because there is no root system to burn and no soil chemistry to disrupt — the effect is cosmetic rather than fatal. What you will see over time is a dull white mineral film from evaporated splash and, beside a salt-water pool, a light salt crust. Both rinse off with plain water and a soft brush. Do not use solvent cleaners, which soften PE and PVC foliage. Rinsing two or three times a season is the entire maintenance regime.
How long do fake palm trees last outdoors?
Outdoor longevity is set by UV exposure rather than by calendar time, and the honest answer is that it depends on the material and the position. Foliage that is not UV-stabilised will visibly chalk and stiffen within a season or two of direct Canadian summer sun; UV-stabilised foliage lasts considerably longer, and a tree in partial or dappled shade longer again. How to choose the right size
Outdoors, wind sets the limit rather than ceiling height. A tall broad canopy on a light base behaves like a sail, so above about 6 ft you want a weighted planter — sand or gravel over the base, not just soil — or a fixed mounting. Palms are the safest tall choice because fronds spill air; grasses and columnar forms are safest in genuinely exposed positions. Do I need to bring these inside before winter, or can they stay on the patio?
It depends on the material. Fibreglass and resin trunks generally tolerate a Canadian winter left in place, since they do not absorb water the way real wood does, but any planter with standing water in the base can crack if it freezes solid, so drain or empty planters before the first hard freeze. Lightweight PE or PVC foliage is more prone to becoming brittle in extreme cold, and moving it somewhere sheltered, even an unheated garage, extends its working life.
How much assembly is needed when an outdoor palm or hedge panel arrives?
Palms and columnar trees usually ship with the trunk built and fronds folded flat or bundled for the box, so you separate and shape them into a natural spread once unpacked. Hedge and green-wall panels ship flat and interlock or zip-tie together on-site, which is quicker but needs a mounting surface planned in advance. No specialist tools are required for either. Does an outdoor palm or tree come with a weighted planter, or do I add my own ballast?
Some pieces ship with a stated weighted or sand-fillable base built for outdoor wind exposure; others arrive in a lighter pot meant to be set into your own planter and ballasted with sand or gravel. Check the individual product details for what is included. Wherever the base is not already filled, add ballast before the piece goes outside rather than after, since a tall canopy in wind is exactly when a light base becomes a problem.
Is the height listed the finished height once potted and standing outside?
Yes, height is given as the finished, potted height as the piece will stand, measured to the top of the foliage, unless a listing states trunk-only. Outdoors that figure matters for the roughly one-metre clearance recommended around a pool edge, since fronds at full spread reach further than the trunk position suggests. Natural variation between units of the same nominal height can be an inch or two, so allow a small margin near tight clearances.
How does a faux palm compare with a real one beside a pool?
A real palm suited to a Canadian outdoor summer is limited to a short list of cold-tolerant species and still needs to be moved indoors or heavily protected over winter, plus regular watering and frond cleanup through the season. A faux palm holds its shape and colour year after year without watering, does not drop fronds into the pool or filter, and can be left in place or stored flat over winter depending on the material, with no seasonal die-back to manage.
